Case Study: Solar Power Solution for a High School in the Eastern Cape
Introduction
Empowering Future Generations: Victoria Park High School in the Eastern Cape Enhanced Their E-Learning Environment with Solar Power
In this case study, we explore how Victoria Park High School in the Eastern Cape, facing frequent power outages and rising energy costs, transformed their e-learning environment with a customised solar power solution. With the rise of electronic textbooks, digital devices, and interactive whiteboards, the school needed a reliable energy source to power their e-learning system efficiently.
The Challenge
Client Background: The school had fully embraced e-learning five years ago, implementing digital tools like student devices and interactive whiteboards. These technological advancements required a stable power supply to maintain uninterrupted learning.
Problem to Solve: Power outages, surges, and load shedding disrupted the school’s energy supply, threatening equipment, data security, and day-to-day operations. Constant communication with parents and stakeholders was also at risk without a consistent energy source. A reliable solar power solution was critical.
Merchant West Steps In
The Approach
Merchant West conducted a comprehensive energy audit and collaborated with One Solar to design a solar power system specifically tailored to the school’s needs.
Solution Provided:
- System Installed:
- 274 x JA Solar 550-watt panels
- Atess 150 Kw Hybrid Inverter (450-600v 225kw) with pedestal
- Freedom Lite Commercial 230/184kwh HV
- Atess Enerlog Monitoring Module
- Total System Cost: R3.9m (EX VAT)
Financing:
- The school’s Governing Body financed 50% of the cost.
- The remaining 50% was financed by Merchant West, with a monthly repayment plan of approximately R50k.
Implementation
Merchant West’s financial support enabled a smooth implementation process. One Solar installed the system along with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), ensuring power availability during peak usage and at night.
The Result
Cost Savings:
The school’s monthly energy costs were reduced from R90k to between R17k and R23k, resulting in significant savings of R20k to R30k per month.
Future Financial Benefits:
After completing the repayment to Merchant West, the school will generate free energy, allowing these savings to be reinvested into educational initiatives.
System Performance:
- Energy Requirements: The solar power system provides up to 130kw per hour, exceeding the school’s average energy consumption of 69kw, with peaks at 93kw.
- Energy Storage: The BESS stores excess energy and can provide up to 24 hours of backup power. Unused energy is fed back into the grid, offering potential credits.
System Maintenance and Future Plans
Maintenance:
Daily monitoring is handled by the campus manager, and monthly meetings with One Solar engineers ensure the system runs smoothly.
Expansion Plans:
As part of the school’s Vision 100 plan, they intend to expand their infrastructure, including additional rooftop solar panels to further boost their energy generation.
Conclusion
Merchant West is proud to contribute to the success of this school’s e-learning transformation through renewable energy.
